How much does a website cost in Australia?

Our websites start from $1,500 and usually pay for themselves within about three months. Here is what changes the price and what a quote should include.

Our websites start from $1,500. What you pay beyond that depends on how many pages the site needs, how much writing and photography is ready and whether it has to do more than present your business.

This guide covers what changes a quote anywhere in Australia, what is usually included, and how to work out whether the site pays for itself. For a Sydney-specific view, see website design cost in Sydney.

How much does a business website cost in Australia?

Quotes for a small business website range widely. A simple site from a freelancer or a template can start in the low thousands or below. Agency builds with strategy, custom design, copy and search work run higher. The number alone tells you little until you know what is inside it.

Our starting point is $1,500 for a custom-coded website. Larger sites, more pages, heavy copywriting, integrations and ecommerce cost more, and we fix the price in a proposal before work starts.

What changes the price

Number and type of pages

Five pages and fifty pages are different jobs. So is a page that lists your phone number and a page that has to explain a complex service and rank for it.

Custom or template

Templates are cheaper to start and harder to make distinctive. Custom code costs more to design and less to keep safe and fast. See why we build custom.

Writing and photos

If you supply good copy and photos, the job is cheaper. If we write the pages and brief the photography, it takes more time and usually produces a better site.

Features and integrations

Quote forms are standard. Online booking, calculators, client logins and links into your quoting or accounting tools add scope. Describe the job you want done, and we will suggest the simplest way to do it.

Search and measurement

A good build makes pages crawlable, gives each one a clear title and sets up analytics. Ongoing search work is a separate service.

What should a quote include?

  • The pages and features, listed
  • Who writes the content and who sources images
  • Design rounds and what counts as a revision
  • Hosting, domain and licence costs, and who pays them
  • Redirects if you already have a site
  • What happens after launch: fixes, security updates, support
  • Who owns the code and accounts

Does a website pay for itself?

In most cases, a website pays for itself within about three months. You can check that with your own numbers.

Take the value of an average job. Suppose it is $800. If a $1,500 website brings in two extra jobs a month that you would not otherwise have won, that is $1,600 a month. The site has paid for itself within the first month or two, and everything after is margin. At one extra job a month, it pays back in a little under two months, and at even half a job a month, in about four months.

The same sum works for higher-value work. If a single job is worth $5,000, one extra job a year covers a $1,500 site more than three times over.

The figures above are an example. Swap in your own average job value and a realistic count of the extra enquiries a better site would add. For most service businesses, a few extra jobs in the first three months covers the cost.

Cheap websites that cost more later

A very low price can mean that writing, security updates, speed work or search setup are missing. The cost then comes back as a rebuild, a hacked site or months of no enquiries. Compare what is included, not just the total. If you are weighing a builder against a professional site, read website builder or professional web design.

Ongoing costs

Plan for a domain, hosting and some form of maintenance. Our website management service covers updates, security, fixes and small changes after launch.
